Owl and the Quiet Magic
For ages 6–8 · 7 min read
High in the old oak tree, Nora the owl had a little round nest. It was lined with soft moss and warm feathers. The night was quiet and kind. A small breeze moved the leaves, slow and gentle. Nora tucked her wings close to her chest. She felt cozy. She felt safe.
The moon was out, round and pale. Its light came softly through the leaves. Nora liked the moon. She liked the way it made everything glow. She blinked her sleepy eyes. The whole forest felt hushed and soft.

Nora was the one who liked to wonder. She noticed small things others missed. Tonight she had a small, quiet thought. "Where does magic hide?" she wondered. She had heard the word before. It sounded warm and shiny. But she had never quite found it.
Something soft glowed near her nest. It was a tiny green light. It blinked on, then off, then on again. Nora leaned closer to look. It was a little firefly, resting on a leaf. Its light was gentle, like a small warm star.

"Hello," Nora whispered. "You glow in the dark. Is that magic?" The firefly only blinked, slow and calm. Nora smiled softly. Maybe magic was near. Maybe it was hiding close by. She decided to go and look.
Nora spread her wings. She floated down from the oak tree. Her wings made no sound at all. The night air was cool and soft. The firefly drifted along beside her, glowing low. Together they moved through the quiet wood.
The path below was dusted with moonlight. Everything looked silver and slow. Nora flew gently from branch to branch. She did not hurry. She only looked. She wanted to find where the magic was.
She passed a small pond. The water lay still and dark. The moon floated on its surface, round and bright. "Look," Nora whispered. "The moon is in the water too." The firefly blinked. Nora thought that was a little bit magic.

Further on, she found her friend Deer. Deer stood among the soft ferns. "Hello, Nora," said Deer in a sleepy voice. "What are you looking for tonight?" Nora landed on a low branch nearby. "I am looking for magic," she said. "Have you seen any?"
Deer thought for a moment. "I am not sure," said Deer. "But the night feels lovely and soft." Nora nodded slowly. She looked around at the quiet wood. The ferns were silver. The air smelled of moss and rain. It did feel lovely. It did feel soft.
They walked on together, slow and calm. The firefly glowed above them. Little dew drops hung on the grass. Each one held a tiny piece of moon. "Look at the dew," Nora whispered. "Each drop is shining." Deer smiled. "They are like little lights," Deer said.
Nora began to notice more and more. She noticed the soft glow of mushrooms. She noticed the silver edge on every leaf. She noticed how the moon followed her through the trees. The whole wood was gently shining. It had been shining all along.
"Deer," Nora said softly. "Do you feel that? Right here, inside?" She put a wing to her chest. "A warm, quiet feeling." Deer nodded slowly. "I feel it too," said Deer. "It is calm. It is happy. It is soft."
Nora looked up at the gentle moon. She thought she understood now. The magic was not loud or bright. It was not a sudden, shiny thing. It was the moon on the water. It was the dew like little lights. It was the warm feeling in her chest.
Magic was the quiet glow of small things. It had been beside her the whole time. It was in the firefly on the leaf. It was in the soft, sleepy wood. It was here, all around, all along.
The night grew deeper and more still. Deer gave a long, slow yawn. "I am getting sleepy," said Deer. "It is time to find my resting spot." Nora nodded. "Sleep well, dear friend," she whispered. Deer curled into the soft ferns. Soon Deer was breathing slow and deep.
Nora turned back toward her old oak tree. The firefly glowed beside her, dim and warm. The wood was very quiet now. The wind had gone to sleep. Even the leaves were still. Nora flew home slowly, soft and low.
She rose up to her little round nest. The moss was warm. The feathers were soft. She tucked her wings close to her chest. The firefly settled on a leaf nearby. Its small light glowed, gentle and low.
Nora looked out at the quiet wood. The moon was sinking, slow and pale. A few first stars blinked in the sky. They glowed softly, like the dew, like the firefly, like the warm feeling inside her.
Her eyes grew heavy. The world grew dim. Everything was soft and slow. The little green light blinked once, then rested. Nora gave a small, sleepy yawn.
The magic was here, all around her. It was the moon. It was the stars. It was her warm and cozy nest. It was the quiet, lovely night.
Hush now, hush now. The wood is sleeping. The moon is low. The stars are soft.
Nora closed her sleepy eyes. She breathed in, slow and warm. She breathed out, soft and long. She was safe. She was home. She was cozy and warm.
Goodnight, little owl. Goodnight, gentle moon. Goodnight, quiet magic. Sleep well, and dream soft. Goodnight.
