Pip and the Little Crown

For ages 3–5 · 4 min read

Pip the hedgehog lived in a nest of soft moss. His little home sat under a curl of warm roots. Outside, the evening was slow and quiet. Inside, Pip was snug and warm.

Pip kept a small box of treasures. He had pretty stones and tiny shells. He had one soft feather, gray as a cloud. Pip did not talk very much. But he loved to find pretty things.

Tonight the moon came up, round and pale. A soft glow slipped into his cozy nest. One little leaf glowed silver in the light. It looked like the top of a tiny crown.

Pip the little hedgehog sits in his cozy moss nest, holding a silver leaf in the soft moonlight.

Pip held the leaf in his small paws. He thought of his friend, the sleepy deer. She liked soft and shiny things too. Maybe he could make her a little crown.

So Pip went out into the hush of the wood. He walked slowly down the soft dirt path. The grass was cool and damp on his feet. The moon walked along beside him.

He found a round white pebble, smooth as milk. He found a curl of pale bark, soft and light. He found three tiny berries, red as a sunset. Pip gathered them gently, one by one.

Pip walks slowly along the moonlit path, holding his little treasures close to his chest.

The wood was quiet and kind. An owl sat high and blinked her sleepy eyes. A small breeze hummed low in the leaves. Pip tucked each treasure close to his chest.

Then he came to the deer, curled in the ferns. She was nearly asleep in her soft green bed. "I made you something," Pip whispered. It was the bravest thing he had said all day.

Together they wove the leaf and the bark. They tucked in the berries and the smooth white stone. They made a tiny crown, soft and round. It was a crown for a sleepy little queen.

The deer wore it gently on her head. She smiled at Pip, slow and warm. "It is the softest crown," she said. "Thank you, dear Pip."

Pip felt happy and warm inside. He did not need many words after all. A small gift had said it for him. Hush now, hush now, the wood seemed to say.

The deer yawned and closed her eyes. Pip patted the moss and turned for home. The moon walked him back down the path. Everything was slow and soft and still.

Pip climbed into his nest of moss. He pulled the warm roots close around him. He set his treasure box near his head. Outside, the first stars blinked awake.

The night was quiet. The night was warm. Pip's eyes grew heavy and slow. He thought of the little crown, soft and round.

Hush now, hush now, little Pip. The moon is keeping watch tonight. Your friends are warm. Your nest is safe.

Pip took one slow, sleepy breath. His small paws went soft and still. The moss held him gently, like a hug. And little Pip drifted off to sleep.

Goodnight, Pip. Goodnight, little crown. Sleep soft. Sleep warm. Goodnight.
